It does technically start and drive but the fuel pressure isnt there and you’ll go into limp mode, unless you dont in which case you’ll be fine. The car was making about 75psi of rail pressure when it should be 750psi at least and closer to 1500psi when driving. Intermittently it would make all 1500 but only if you didnt let it idle too long and it would cut back to 75psi under mid acceleration. Easy fix, sounds like a failing high pressure fuel pump, they go regularly on these cars anyways.
R emove the intake, 3 screws, and disconnect the fuel lines and your good to go.
Ex act same issue with the new pump but now it will make higher pressures when it does decide to work. So one would figure maybe it’s the in tank pump and it dosent supply a steady enough stream of fuel so the computer throws a limp mode. That would explain the fuel pressure dips under acceleration.
The lh assembly is the fuel filter unit that Mini felt was necessary to mount in tank on the opposite side with a seperate removal hatch
I nstalled a new (used) fuel pump and filter. Same exact issues, just now the rail pressure sits around 90-100psi. Went fiddling around after that disappointment and realized disconnecting the hpfp solenoid made absolutely no difference to fuel pressure, so it would seem that the problem has been electrical all along.
P icking up wiring diagrams tomorrow and with some luck I'll find a problem.

My hpfp got replaced under some factory extended warranty on the part since they new they were an issue and kept using them. What is the part cost on those now days?

C hina direct was $140 for what appeared to be a rebuild, autozone will want $500+, and I’m sure bmw will want around $800

Its all good. At least you haven't had to put it into "service configuration"

Not officially yet but I think the head rebuild, hg , turbo, and timing chain replacement 1000 miles ago called for it

Its not too bad once you do it a couple of times...

I did a head agasket, chain, and guides on an R56 Cooper S about a year ago. It was a learning experience.

How are you measuring the high side fuel pressure? Scan tool data? The DME uses a sensor on the high pressure fuel rail. Maybe pressure sensor could be bad. I would also double check your cam. The hpfp is driven by the cam .

Please just unplug the rail pressure sensor and see if it will run properly

I will certainly try that, is it a know way to isolate problems with these n14's?

Im using a scantool , the sensor appears to be functional as it fluctuates with throttle inputs and the like, but as someone mentioned above I will check it out.
If the cam was out of wack shouldn't I be getting more serious issues?

Nwe here so not sure if I am posting correctly. I just went through the same problem and it was the K96 relay on the fuse box.

My N12 is showing a left fuel sensor fault and I'm having similar symptoms to you. Have you interrogated the car's on board diagnostics? It will give you a fault code and then you'll have to Google the code. That's what led me to my fuel sensor.

Try replacing and programming the JBE.

Got codes for an open circuit at the hpfp solenoid, so I'll trace the wires and see if their open. As of today the car dropped a cylinder and threw a few codes for a dead coil so we will see about fixing the original issue after this

How did you test the relay? I'm gathering that its internal to the fuse board

Is there any way to test before just throwing parts at it?
